Jose Mourinho took a risk at the weekend, making eight changes to his Manchester United team for their Premier League encounter with Burnley.
However it paid off with his fresh players winning 2-0 at Turf Moor.
Two of those who were brought into the side from the one that had overcome Anderlecht in midweek scored the goals – Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney.
Martial scored a brilliant counter-attacking goal with a move that he started and finished. Rooney soon afterwards showed sharpness to pounce on a loose ball in the box and prod home from a tight angle.
Mourinho deployed Rooney on the left and Martial down the centre in roles that could easily have been reversed. Afterwards the Manchester United manager explained his logic.
‘I could play Rooney through the middle and Anthony on the left – would be more natural.
‘But we wanted to overload a little bit the centre with Rooney dropping inside and we wanted to try with Anthony to get behind because he’s obviously faster.
‘They did very well. I think I cannot choose individually a performance because everybody was very well.’
