Manchester United look set to retain the services of David De Gea this summer after Real Madrid’s president appeared to rule out a move for the goalkeeper.
The Spain international has been persistently linked with a move to the Bernabeu and many expected him to finally go this summer.
He was on the verge of joining the Champions League holders in 2015 but a clerical error saw the deal collapse at the eleventh hour.
In the intervening time De Gea signed a new deal at Old Trafford while Keylor Navas – who was supposed to move in the opposite direction – has excelled at the Bernabeu.
During the last two years the Costa Rica international has helped Real Madrid to two European crowns, playing a key role in them becoming the first team to defend the title in the Champions League era.
That appears to have changed the situation according to Real Madrid president Florentino Perez.
‘We haven’t spoken to De Gea,’ Perez told the Spanish radio station Onda Cero following his re-election as president yesterday.
‘Two years ago we had an issue and then the appropriate circumstances didn’t arise.
‘The players are very fond of Keylor and also the coach. I like Keylor Navas.
‘Why he wanted Gea before? Because Zinedine Zidane did not know him [Navas].’
